Inspect first

Before cleaning and moving in is a great time to check everything works, including electronics, boilers, taps, lights, sockets, and windows.

For renters, it’s time to take clear photos and videos, since you can document any marks or faults while the space is empty. I always tell clients to capture even small things because it protects you later. Most leases expect the space to be cleaned to a professional standard when moving out, but this does not apply if it was not cleaned to such an extent upon move in.

How to tackle cleaning

All rooms:

Clean the walls, contact points, windows, skirting boards and anything built in. Vacuum slowly so you pull up every bit of dust, then mop or steam the floors until the water stays clear. If you have carpets, spot clean any marks or consider hiring a carpet cleaner so you are not living on other people’s residue.

Kitchen:

Kitchens often take the most time. I recommend thoroughly cleaning the kitchen with degreaser, to make sure all the layers of dirt and oil build up come off. You’ll want to pay extra attention to handles, cabinet doors, and shelf interiors.

Kitchen appliances:

Your kitchen appliances will also need a deep clean to get them ready, including the fridge and oven. Most importantly, clean the dishwasher filter and run an empty hot cycle to sanitise everything.

Bathroom:

In the bathroom, you’ll want to thoroughly descale and clean the taps, tiles, and glass. I also highly recommend spraying mould remover in any key areas, and especially on the shower.
