General advice
Be careful with any potential acidic additives, such as citrus and vinegar, as they can damage or discolour floors. For example, they can affect stone floors or the finish on wood flooring.
Always use warm or hot water. Not only does this better dissolve dirt, it also makes your water additives more fragrant and effective.
Essential oil
This would be my number 1 recommendation and the simplest additive to mop water. Essential oils disperse easily, are super customisable, and are stronger than pantry ingredients, and are very quick to use.
The most suitable scents for cleaning are mint, citrus, lavender, and eucalyptus, which make things feel extra clean. Be careful not to use too much, as one or two drops is usually enough.
Citrus peels
These are a lovely way to repurpose something that would have otherwise been discarded. Let the peels sit in hot water for five minutes, strain, and add the infused water to the mop bucket.
Herbs
Herbs such as thyme, rosemary, and especially mint work well. You can either infuse them or steep in hot water for a quicker method. However, make sure to strain the mixture to avoid loose bits on your clean floors!
Lemon juice
Lemon juice provides a clean scent and slight acidity that helps with mild stains and overcomes smells. However, take care to avoid this on acid sensitive floors.
