  1. Oven racks: The dishwasher won’t make a miracle happen, and these still need a scrub if they have been heavily used and not cleaned in a long time. However, using the dishwasher is perfect for basic maintenance, and will go a long way to preventing grease layering on the metal over time.

  2. Silicone mould ice cube trays: these can absorb the smell of the freezer due to silicone being a porous material, and transfer the smell to your ice cubes. They are generally safe for dishwashers and the higher temperature helps remove the smell.

  3. Plastic makeup organisers: These can be a nightmare to clean by hand, as it’s hard to remove dirt build up from all the crevices. Dishwashers to an excellent job at this. The same thing applies for toothbrush holders, soap holders, and sponge holders.

  4. Microwave turntables: as these are essentially a glass plate, they do just fine in the dishwasher and can save a lot of hassle.

General tip for deciding what can go into the dishwasher: it’s less about the item itself and more about what material it is made of. Silicone, glass, metal, and ceramics hold up well. Meanwhile, wood, anything with glue, and fragile items, should not be placed in the washing machine.

Heat can also discolour of bend some plastics, so its best to be careful with these, and where possible use a lower water temperature.

General dishwasher tip: make sure to clear and clean the filter periodically, as it can get very dirty quickly and will affect the cleanliness of your dishes.
